Killing Flower (Luci mie traditrici)

The Killing Flower 643x200

Salvatore Sciarrino

Salvatore Sciarrino’s opera was inspired by the true story of Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo, renowned in his lifetime as a master of the Madrigal but equally notorious for the cool, brutal murder of his wife and lover.

Director, Michael McCarthy says:
I think The Killing Flower is an extraordinary and unique theatrical work, and I believe we have found a remarkable and expectation-breaking way of performing it that turns opera into something utterly new and different. The music is like nothing you've ever heard – both ensemble and singers operate in whispers, almost at the edge of audibility, and yet the impact is immense! Our performances have received rapturous ovations from audiences who are consistently captivated and caught in its spell, and Simon Banham's design has enabled us to play to all the piece's strengths – as immersive as possible. An audience will never be closer to singers, who themselves are completely immersed in the piece and perform with amazing integrity.
